Myths About Metabolism - How To Increase Your Metabolism

Myths about metabolism abound and for every ridiculous diet there is a correspondingly ridiculous myth. The following is a list of the most prominent myths about metabolism. Whether misunderstanding, misconception or misinformation, not knowing the truth can cause you to waste time in your weight loss goals.

Here are some of the most common myths about metabolism:

MYTH - Your metabolism slows as you get older. TRUTH - It's not your metabolism that changes. It's that your habits change your metabolism. We do lose muscle mass as we age if we do not exercise regularly and pay attention to our diet. We also get more sedentary and burn fewer calories through activity. Giving some thought to our activity and the calories we consume, we can keep our metabolism turned up. In other words; you are not gaining weight because your metabolism has slowed, your metabolism is slowing because you increasing the ratio of fat to muscle.

MYTH - You inherit your metabolism and you can't do anything about it. Truth - Look closely at those people you see who "eat whatever they want and never gain weight". I used to have an uncle like that. The guy was always eating and rail-thin. But as I think back, it wasn't carbs and fat he always had in front of him, it was protein rich foods. He was also an active guy. He was kinda fidgety and always walking around the house and fixing this or that. In other words, he was burning calories. Building more muscle through activity allows you to change your metabolism.

MYTH - Certain foods increase your metabolism. Truth - Some foods, such as fiber rich foods, do require a little more energy to digest but they do not have a significant effect on metabolism. These foods are dense and contribute to weight loss in other ways.

MYTH - When I reduce calories my metabolism slows so why exercise. Truth - Yes, reducing calories can slow metabolism unless you make adjustments. Eating small meals throughout the day will keep your metabolism higher. Even modest activity increases metabolism and a consistent exercise program will greatly accelerate your weight loss goals. Here are some tips to turn your 'thermostat' up and get your metabolism working for you:

These are the facts to keep in mind when you are working to manage your metabolism:

  • You eat for fuel. Not all food is the same and the body uses different foods differently. Learn to make good choices. If it comes in a box or can or drive-through window you may need to rethink.
  • Do a minimum of 30 minutes a day of sustained activity. Walk, run, swim or ride your bike. Anything that makes you breath a little.
  • Build lean muscle mass by doing resistance, or weight training three days a week.
  • Look for the small things that ad up: park at the back of the lot, take the stairs, walk your kids to school, walk your dog, etc.
  • Never eat less than 1200 calories a day (1200 for women, 1500 for men) and eat throughout the day. Not eating enough or eating infrequently will slow metabolism.
  • Never skip breakfast. Eat within the first hour of waking. Sumo wrestlers skip breakfast because it add weight quickly.
  • Consider quality supplements to boost metabolism
  • Have a supply of protein-rich healthy snacks on hand to keep you away from fast food or junk food.

The very best way to get your arms around you metabolism is to have a body composition evaluation and a plan tailored to your body and habits. Seek an experienced wellness coach for the very best results.
