OK, you've read all the advice that says you should drink more water. Maybe you've even tried to increase your water intake but didn't quite make it to a fully fledged habit. Check out these easy tips for how to drink more water.
1. Keep a glass or bottle nearby
If you're constantly having to make special trips to get your water then you'll drink less than if it's within easy reach at least most of the time.
If you're not in danger of knocking the glass over and drowning your computer, keep a glass near that. But if you're on the clumsy side of things, a bottle would be more sensible.
2. Sip regularly
It's usually much easier to take regular sips of water than it is to gulp down a whole glass full of the liquid.
Make it a habit to take regular sips of water and you'll be pleasantly surprised at how fast you get through it without feeling that you're enduring punishment.
3. Build up slowly
Most people think that they will be forever visiting the rest room if they slurp down the recommended 8 glasses a day.
That is less likely to happen if you gradually build up your water intake. So if you're not drinking more than a glass or two most days, decide that you're going to increase by, say, an extra glass per day each week. So this week you'd aim for 3 glasses a day, next week 4 glasses and so on.
4. Don't panic if you forget
New habits take time to learn. And that includes drinking more water.
Just because you occasionally don't remember to drink lots of water each day doesn't mean that you've failed. Do it as often as possible.
For instance, my routine is different at weekends and I regularly find that I drink less water than I do on week days. But I keep at it and it works!
5. Migrate your drinking
If you regularly drink soft drinks, tea or coffee than swap some of these for water over the next few weeks.
You'll keep drinking the same quantity of liquid but an increasing amount of it will be water rather than water plus other ingredients.
6. Keep track, especially at first
Until drinking more water becomes second nature it pays to keep a fairly tight track of what you're drinking.
Probably not quite as far as writing down a log, although some people do this, but definitely something as easy a few ticks on a notepad won't hurt.
7. Drink with your meals
In much the same way as waiters will keep your glass topped up with wine or beer, make sure that you have a topped up glass of water with each meal. And actually drink from it, rather than using it as a table decoration.
8. Place a bet
If someone else you know also needs to drink more water then challenge them to see which of you can drink more glasses of water (within reason of course) over the next couple of weeks.
That's long enough to make sure that one of you doesn't cheat and just drink gallons for a day or two. It's also long enough for both of you to get in the habit of drinking more water as a matter of course.
9. Make it automatic
If there's almost always a glass of water within arms reach, after a while you'll find yourself automatically reaching out for a sip. Which will serve as a reminder if for any reason you haven't remembered to get your fill of water today.
