Can Apple Cider Vinegar Help You Lose Weight?

How does apple cider vinegar help you lose weight?

Apple cider vinegar has had a reputation as an aid to weight loss, but can we expect it to give good results?

For many years, apple cider vinegar has been claimed by health experts to help improve, heal and regulate many complaints and ailments. The main focus of benefits has been on high blood pressure, high cholesterol, arthritis and allergies.

It has also been linked to helping with weight loss as it is believed to be an appetite suppressant and an aid to boosting metabolism.

Although many of us believe that apple cider vinegar works, and use it religiously, there is actually very little scientific research or evidence to enforce the claims that it is beneficial to any ailments or medical condition, or as an aid to weight loss.

Apple cider vinegar does not appear to have any detrimental effects on the body, providing we do not use it to excess, and there are also very few side effects. Problems have been reported if large doses have been ingested daily, rather than limiting consumption to a couple of teaspoons.

We may suffer severe irritation of the mouth, throat, oesophagus or stomach if we drink undiluted apple cider vinegar, and skin irritation may also occur if applied undiluted in the treatment of infections, stings or acne.

As a precaution, as with many dietary changes, we should check with our doctor before starting to take apple cider vinegar, particularly if we are already taking some form of medication or if we have a pre-existing medical condition, are pregnant or nursing.

Ideally, the recommended dosage of apple cider to aid weight loss is between 1-2 teaspoons of raw, organic apple cider vinegar diluted in 8 ounces of water, 3 times daily before meals. Many of us may not have tasted apple cider vinegar before and may find the harsh, acidic, tart flavour unpalatable.

We could therefore improve the taste by mixing it with a little organic honey or perhaps maple syrup to help reduce the acidity and make it much more palatable. We could also dilute it further if we do not want to introduce additional calories, to enable us to drink it easier.

We should be aware that this, as with most dietary aids, is not going to be the miracle cure or the magic ingredient that will help us to shed those pounds.

We also need to make the effort to make changes and improvements to our lifestyle in conjunction with our apple cider vinegar additional boost. We should also address and improve our diet and exercise regime to obtain our desired results.
