Whey Protein - Does it Help with Fat Loss?

What you'd normally hear about whey protein is that it is great for building muscle. A guy would think this is really cool and want to take whey protein to gain some massive muscle. A girl on the other hand might not like the idea of putting on too much muscle and look really bulky.

Well girls not to worry, because women can not put on muscle like men can due to various factors and one being testosterone, a muscle promoting hormone.

A woman's body doesn't produce nearly as much as a mans. More good news, there are many other benefits including different ways in which whey protein helps with fat loss.

Whey protein can help with:

  • Maintaining healthy skin, muscles, nails, hair, and other body tissues
  • Cancer
  • Diabetes
  • Caring for wounds
  • Physical performance
  • Healthy aging
  • Weight loss/management

Let's take a look to see...

What is whey protein?

Protein is a major component of every major body system. And whey protein is a high quality protein in powder form that comes from cows milk. What we usually hear is that we mostly get our protein from fish, poultry and beef. This is true because this is what people tend to usually eat.

However there are different places we can get protein from.... ask the vegetarians, they have some pretty tasty recipes to get protein if you don't eat meat. One way, and one of the best ways, to get protein is whey protein. It is the most nutritious way to get protein.

How it helps with fat loss

- Whey has a good thermic effect, which means your body requires more energy just to digest protein than other foods. In return you will have burned more calories after a meal with protein than without.

-It helps with stabilizing blood sugar levels by slowing down the absorption of sugar into your blood stream. So there's no insulin spikes and you can control cravings better. A good thing to do for this is right before a cardio session take 1 to 2 scoops of whey protein, so that you have a low to no carbohydrates in your blood stream and protein to give you sustained energy and help repair muscle quick through out your workout.

After your workout take 2 scoops of the protein because whey is digested quickly, delivering what your body needs to repair itself after your workout.

- It has little to no carbs and fat.

Including whey protein to any exercise program and diet will definitely boost your fat burning capabilities.
You can take it as a snack by itself or with a banana or make a shake with it and enjoy the amino acids in the protein that add extra health benefits.

5 Ways to Get Good Protein for Weight loss

5 Ways to Get Good Protein for Weight loss
Get the Best Protein to Lose Weight

I have written before about the importance of trying to get good protein in your diet to achieve sustained and permanent weight loss, so I won't go over everything again here! Enough to say that it promotes lean muscle mass (which burns more calories) and helps you to avoid snacking.

Well - that sounds like enough good reasons to get good protein in your diet right there, but, if you are like me, you probably have no clue how to get GOOD protein, or even what that looks like! So - here are 5 top tips on where to get that good protein and what the pros and cons of each protein source are:

1. Eggs - Talk about starting with the best possible! Egg contains all the essential amino acids in the exact proportions required by the body for optimum growth and maintenance of lean, metabolically active tissue. Not only that, but they are low in calories too and they are easy to cook! Boiled eggs also make a great snack to stave off those hunger pains without breaking your diet.

2. Red meat - This has to be the least "diet-like" way to get good protein when you are losing weight! There's something about a good steak that just shouts "I'm not on a diet"- unfortunately, although the protein is great, it carries with it a penalty. A 6oz Porterhouse steak, for example, has 38grams of protein, but it also delivers 44 grams of fat - almost 3/4 of the daily amount. If you want to use steak to get good protein intake, stick to the leanest cuts and only eat it occasionally.

3. Fish and poultry - These are the best of the meat proteins - providing a great way to get good protein, but with almost no saturated fats. The trick here, of course, is in the preparation - deep fried chicken is probably not the way to shed those pounds, but there are other ways to cook it! And if we compare fish to that red meat - 6oz of salmon gives you 34grams of protein, but only 18grams of fat - MUCH better!

4. Soy and whey proteins - The debate as to which of these is the best source of protein rages on the internet - just type "soy vs whey" into Google and you'll be reading for months! From my experience, a combination of the two gives the best results in weight loss - and my reasoning is simple: Whey protein is very easy to digest, so it satisfies your hunger immediately it hits your stomach, reducing the urge to overeat at mealtimes. Then the soy protein is slower to digest, so that helps to keep your hunger satisfied for longer. I don't know many manufacturers that have gotten this balance right, but Herbalife certainly have.

5. Nuts, lentils & beans - These are the traditional protein sources for the vegetarian diet, and I have to say - they taste great! I was really not a fan of the idea of "nut roast" until I actually tried it and, for me, many of the vegetarian options are tastier than the meat equivalents once you pull all the fat out to make them healthy! If you've not tried this style of cooking before - Google is again your friend - you don't know what you're missing!

So - what's the message here? Simple - if you're going to get that long term weight loss you are looking for, then you need to get good protein into your diet - but that doesn't mean boring! You can get the best protein in VERY tasty packages - go experiment, have fun with it and you won't even notice you are on a diet!

What Are Good Sources of Protein and How Much Do You Need When Trying to Lose Weight?
Protein is great if you are trying to lose to lose weight because it keeps you feeling full and helps you lose fat and not muscle when dieting. It also helps keep your metabolism running at optimal speed which is important if you want to see those pounds drop off. You are probably already convinced that it is good for you but what are good sources of protein and how much do you need to eat each day?

We know that diets that include protein are more effective than diets that don't, however it is possible to have too much of a good thing which isn't good for your health, so what is the right amount of protein that you need to eat every day to give you your daily needs?

The following guidelines takes into account the amount of exercise you are doing and also how much you currently weigh since people who exercise need nearly double that amount than others who don't.

Non-Exercisers - Multiply 0.37 grams per pound of body weight (so a 140lb women would need 52 grams of protein per day.

Exercisers - Multiply 0.50 grams per pound of body weight (so a 210lb man who does regular exercise would need 105 grams of protein per day.

OK so now that we know how much we should be eating, what are the best foods to eat to get our daily dosage?

The two highest sources of protein are:
(1) low fat meats such as fish, beef and chicken which all have about 20 grams of protein per 90 gram serving and
(2) one scoop of protein powder also has around 20 grams of protein per serving.

Cottage cheese is a good source of protein which contains approximately 15 grams or protein per ½ cup serving.

Other good sources include navy beans - 8 grams per ½ cup serving, eggs - 6 grams per egg, and milk - 8 grams per cup.

If you are struggling to get enough protein into your diet, trying making smoothies with soy or whey based protein powder as they can be a quick simple way to boost your daily intake.
